A Royal Affair stars Mads Mikkelsen as Johann Friedrich Struensee, the German doctor who tended to the mentally ill Danish King Christian VII and committed the ultimate betrayal. Nikolaj Arcel's film focuses on the illicit relationship between Struensee and Queen Caroline Mathilde, a secret love that divided the royal court and sparked a revolution. This bold and sensuous 18th-century period drama has rightly won plaudits on the European festival circuit, most notably in Berlin, where it scooped two Silver Bears.
